Antigua
Guatemala
2025
Once a colonial capital, Antigua is a city suspended in time, where preserved architecture, vibrant markets, and enduring traditions shape its identity. Nestled in the heart of Guatemala, the city serves as a living canvas, reflecting centuries of cultural, religious, and social continuity. Traditional dress, especially worn by women, remains a vital expression of heritage, with colors and patterns carrying the weight of history, community, and belonging.
Every year, the city becomes the stage for one of Guatemala’s most powerful religious traditions: Primer Domingo de Cuaresma. The streets fill with incense, music, and immense wooden floats carried on the shoulders of devoted men and women. Guided by the drums and brass of the marching bands, history and tradition rise to the surface, and the entire city unites in a common faith.
Beyond the grandeur of the procession lie countless individual gestures: the carriers straining under the weight, the faithful immersed in prayer, the onlookers, tourists and locals alike, drawn into the collective moment. Religion here is not peripheral but central, binding people together through shared belief and ritual.
